| | | Dr. Bruce Gellin Director, National Vaccine Program U.S. Department of Health and Human Services A pandemic can occur when a virus changes and humans have no immunity to it. So what we’re worried about is the adaptation of a virus or a mutation of a virus so that no human has any immunity, and everyone on the planet would be vulnerable to that infection. We don’t know whether or not the current virus has the ability to even cause a pandemic, and if it does, we don’t know what kind of a pandemic it could be. Our preparations are looking at a range of different scenarios because we want to be sure that we’re preparing for what could be a worst case.
